Climate change and displacement: Protecting 'climate

If it continues unabated, it could lead to one of the largest mass human migrations in history. Climate migrants are not refugees, but they deserve the same protections as convention refugees. The intersection of climate change and migration requires new , nimble, and comprehensive solutions. The IOM encourages the full use of all existing bodies of domestic, regional, and international laws on displacement and disaster management to find ways of accommodating environmental migrants. Climate change and the environment has a big impact on our work at UNHCR, as well as the lives of millions of forcibly uprooted people around the world. Many of them rely on the environment for survival, particularly during emergencies – for food, shelter, energy, fire and warmth, medicine, agriculture, income-generation activities and more.
